How to end squatting
published: Saturday | September 6, 2008

One can recall the mayhem created by squatters at Flankers, St James a few years ago. The well-known owners tried to regain possession of their property without success and eventually had to sell the property at a loss. There are also several other violent confrontations, subsequent to that in Montego Bay and across the island.

To minimise these confrontations, the present law on trespass ought to be abolished and a new law put in place to empower the police to arrest perpetrators without warrant, for entering for the purpose of squatting on any property without the lawful consent of the property owners. Those so arrested should be liable on conviction before a Resident Magistrate to a serious fine or imprisonment with or without hard labour.

Responsible sex

I note with some concern an ad on one of our TV stations promoting condom use. I have no difficulty with the idea, as all means must be employed to get the message out about responsible sex.

However, our youth must also be told the truth that sex with or without a condom has a very serious and long-lasting psychological and emotional impact on all persons involved.

Delaying immediate gratification until one has achieved one's goals before engaging in sex is not old-fashioned. In fact, then one will be better able to deal with the consequences that sexual relationships produce.

Flag flip-flops OK

I write in response to John Maxwell's letter regarding supposed disrespect to the Jamaican flag.

I do not think there is anything wrong with doing creative designs of the Jamaican flag. And those who purchase them obviously do so out of admiration.

As for it being lain on the ground, draped around the neck etc. I don't see the desecration if it is being done in love and admiration.

The symbolism of the flag remains intact whether it is on a flagpole,a flip-flop or on the back of a shorts hugging an ample female bottom.
