NOTE-WORTHY

That Forbes appointment

Bruce Golding won the 2007 general election promising to wipe out corruption at all levels of government, and Jamaicans believed that the prime minister would have done this.

However, Mr Golding should be ashamed of the way in which his government appointed Marcia Forbes as the permanent secretary of the ministry of mining and telecommunication.

No one is questioning Mrs Forbes' educational qualifications. Obviously, she is a very qualified woman. However, one must ask whether her appointment was fair and followed established procedures.

Also, what was the role of the Public Service Commission in all of this? Shame on you Mr Golding.

  • … PNP can't complain

I cannot believe the Opposition's concerns over the ruling party's appointments.

No other administration positioned their friends and associates in key position than the People's National Party (PNP).

Qualified and dedicated civil servants have been stifled by the growing trend of successive governments practising nepotism, to the detriment of career civil servants.

Again, the Opposition, while bringing this to the fore, is in no position to criticise. I shall thank them however if they help to curb this disgusting trend, which they have fostered.

  • AA guarantee

After reading the response from Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett to the criticisms from the Air Jamaica management, I was wondering what benefit would there be to the national airline and the tourism industry if the impending (or current) recession in the United States limits the number of visitors.

With the guarantee in place, even with reduced traffic and high fuel prices, the following is likely to happen. American Airlines (AA) reduces fares on shared routes with Air J and flies with between 65 per cent and 75 per cent capacity.

The result is Air Jamaica loses and the Government pays AA. Why would any private investor be willing to invest in Air Jamaica under these conditions?

  • Bad subsidy policy

What a noble idea - putting Air Jamaica out of business to save American Airlines. In Jamaica, it is the tail that wags the dog, while the dog chases its tail!
