Single mom gets help with back-to-school plans
published: Wednesday | September 10, 2008

Aldith Green, a single mother who was struggling to finance her three children's back-to-school preparations, has had some of the burden lifted from her shoulders through assistance from two Jamaicans living in the diaspora.

The 33-year-old mother received gifts in cash and kind from two Jamaican women living in the United States - Marsia Wisdom and Sherene Smith.

The two women decided to assist Green after reading an article titled 'As the school term approaches ... Single mum faces tough life lessons' in the August 28 publication of The Gleaner.

A package containing school supplies - bags, notebooks, pens, pencils and other stationery - was sent to Green by Wisdom, who resides in New York City.

Uniforms and textbooks

The money she received, Green said, was used to buy school uniforms and textbooks for her children - Zamar Edwards, 16; Abigail Edwards, 13; and Devon Wilson, nine.

Green's nine-year-old son attends Alpha Primary School; her 13-year-old daughter attends Norman Gardens Primary and Junior High; and her eldest child, 16, attends Holy Trinity High School.

Green told The Gleaner that her three children started school yesterday.

The new school year officially started on Monday.

Green told The Gleaner that, if it was not for the women's assistance, her children would still be at home.

"I am very grateful," she said.

As a show of gratitude, Green said she would be sending letters to both women.
