It would be very interesting to hear from Captain Burrell what really the Reggae Boyz and the country stand to gain from the sacking of René Simoes.

Will his sacking increase the chances of the Reggae Boyz making it to South Africa in 2010? One of the heaviest burdens around the neck of Jamaican football is that it has attracted a following of uninformed zealots - where football is concerned - whose voices and sentiments, unfortunately, are impacting the direction in which the country's football programme goes.

This is the cause of Simoes being fired by Burrell, who heard the voices of the uninformed calling for his removal.

Angry zealots

Succumbing to that which Jamaican officials seem to do best - if you want to keep your job and your friends, make sure you do what is popular - Burrell took no chance at dissatisfying the angry zealots, and so fired Simoes before he came back to Jamaica, ensuring that there would be smiling faces to greet him on arrival.

The cold reality of Jamaica's football is that even if we get the best coach in the world, we would still struggle to reach the qualifying stage. And that is due to the fact that our football programme is light years behind those of the well-established football nations.

Did we really expect to beat or even draw with Mexico in Mexico? Did we really expect to win Honduras, or even draw with them there? Who are we trying to fool. Get real.
