Ziadie on course to retain Calder title
published: Monday | September 15, 2008

Ziadie

MIAMI, Florida (CMC):

Jamaican trainer Kirk Ziadie scored one victory last Saturday and is maintaining a clear lead as he bids to retain his trainers' title at the 2008 Calder meet.

With just over four weeks remaining in the season, Ziadie holds a five-win lead over nearest rival Edward Plesa after his two-year-old colt, Sir Edgar, won Saturday's first race.

Sir Edgar gave Ziadie his 36th win of the season in a competitive tussle for the trainers' championship.

Plesa (31) and Martin Wolfson (30) are stalking Ziadie, while former champions Daniel Hurtak (26) and William White (25) are also within striking distance.

First race

In the US$27,000 first race over five furlongs, Sir Edgar was a hot 2-to-5 favourite and scored a solid front-running victory under jockey Eddie Dominguez.

Sir Edgar clocked one minute 00.00 seconds for the victory, defeating the 10-1 bet Tactical Light.

Caribbean jockeys Allen Maragh and Gary Bain also won on Saturday's card.

Jamaican Maragh won the US$11,000 fourth race over five furlongs with the two-year-old colt Dealing Lucky (5-1).

Dealing Lucky won by a head in 1:00.35, over the 2-1 favourite Bullet Tripp with leading jockey Pascacio Lopez.

Bahamian Bain piloted Stormy Deeds (9-2) to victory by a neck in the US$9,000 10th race over five furlongs.

Stormy Deeds clocked 1:01.09 for the victory.
