'I could have done no more'
published: Saturday | September 20, 2008

Robertson

Dr Paul Robertson, the man who served as campaign director for the People's National Party (PNP) in the September 2007 general election, has said that he did not withhold support from Portia Simpson Miller.

Simpson Miller told The Gleaner on Thursday that members of Peter Phillips' campaign team passively resisted her leadership.

She also said that persons who supported Phillips in his failed bid to win the PNP presidency in 2006 did not want to accept her as president.

counterclaim

However, Robertson, who served the PNP in two previous general elections as campaign director, has countered the claim.

"I knew of no decision at the time of the 2007 campaign to challenge the president, nor did I offer passive resistance in any way, shape or form," Robertson said in a letter to The Gleaner yesterday. Robertson was campaign director for Phillips' failed presidency campaign two years ago.

The PNP lost the general election 32-28 to the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the 60-seat House of Representatives.

"I did everything I could to have party leader Comrade Simpson Miller re-elected as prime minister. I gave that campaign everything I had. I could have done no more," he said.
