These were also 'Olympic Queens'
published: Saturday | September 20, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I truly congratulate The Gleaner on its supplement titled 'Olympic Queens'. The significance of its timing ought not to be under-estimated. Presumably, the intention is to publish a sequel on our 'Olympic Kings'. If not, surely, you risk, among other things, being labelled 'sexist'.

My primary concern though is the omission of such significant icons, or (as you name them) "queens", as Rosie Allwood Morrison, who, with Carol Cummings and Jacqueline Pusey, were named on the Roll of Honour of the Games of the XXlst Olympiad. One may perhaps not question too much the omission of Una Morris, our female standard bearer and a 400 metres semi-finalist at the 1964 Games, but Allwood, given what she was up against on the circuit at the time when the Europeans, especially, determined a strong, albeit questionable advantage, is a significantly glaring omission in my view.

I am, etc.,
