Two Clarendon All-Star football teams departed the island yesterday for Cayman Island.

The teams will play two practice matches against the Cayman Islands' national senior men's team. The first game is set for this afternoon with the second down for tomorrow at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

Both games are set to start at 7:30 p.m. The teams are scheduled to return to the island on Monday.

MegaMart, Colours face off

MegaMart Development Squad challenges Colours International in one of two semi-final cricket games for the Mid-season President's Trophy tomorrow at the Bridgeport Sports ground.

The last time the two met, MegaMart defeated Colours by 49 runs and Colours will be gunning to avenge that defeat.

The other semi-final match pits defending champions Ken's Wildflower against Reid's Pen at the Ken's Wildflower Sports ground. Both games begin at 11 a.m. Two of the four semi-finalists won their matches last week. Ken's Wildflower claimed a seven-wicket win over MegaMart while Reid's Pen beat neighbours Belmont by 37 runs.

The Clarendon Football Association (CFA) 2007-2008 awards ceremony is scheduled for September 25 at Hotel Versalles.

Chairman of the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), Ludlow Watts, who was also the manager of Jamaica's successful team at the Beijing Olympics, will be the guest speaker.

The function is set to start at 7:00 p.m.

Chess Open

The 2008 Harold Chan Chess Open will be held at the Campion College Auditorium this weekend.

The tournament, which will be staged over six rounds, will have two sections, an Open section and an amateur section for players with a JCF rating under 1600.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three players in each section, the best Under-10, 12 and 14 players, best rural player, best female player, best junior and best new player.

The tournament was named in honour of Dr. Harold Chan, who won the Jamaica National Chess Championship title from 1972-74 and 1978-79 and was one of the first players in Jamaica to earn the National Master title in 1975.

Winner of the tournament for the past two years, National Master Geoffrey Byfield, has indicated his intention to take top honours for the third straight year.

Three-day swim clinic at stadium pool

A three-day swim clinic continues at the National Stadium Pool today and tomorrow.

Two-time Olympic swimmer Dawn Chuck is the lead instructor at the clinic, which is being hosted by Tornadoes Swim Club and is a part of the club's ongoing programme of exposing its members to international coaching. The clinic's focus is technique development.

A graduate of Immaculate Conception High School and Brown University, Chuck is the assistant coach at Duke University, with responsibility for technique development for more than 50 swimmers and is also involved in administrative aspects of the swimming programme.

Rugby seminar

The Jamaica Rugby Union (JRU) will this weekend stage another segment of its coaching and referee seminars at G.C. Foster College, starting at 9:00 a.m. each day.

The JRU is also appealing to corporate Jamaica for support in its campaign for the International Rugby Board (IRB) 2009 Sevens Dubai Rugby World Cup Qualifier.

There will also be the Caribbean Championships in Nassau, Bahamas.

The JRU held its Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Alhambra Inn yesterday.

Burger King boxing series

The fifth event of Burger King amateur boxing series '08 will take place today at the Bruising Gym, Stony Hill, in St Andrew

The event will mark the opening of the newest gym in Jamaica and will feature boxers from that gym and the Heavy Metal Iron Club in St Ann's Bay along with more experienced boxers from other gyms across the island.

The BK series '08 has made stops in Kingston, Portmore, Savanna-la-Mar and St. Ann's Bay and has been exposing youth and fans alike to the excitement of the sport of boxing.

Mini-League cricketers, netballers awarded

World-renowned cricket umpire Steve Bucknor has challenged the youngsters who participated in the St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite Partners Mini-League cricket and netball competitions to maximise the opportunities afforded them through the programmes.

Bucknor also lauded St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite Partners for its insight in running the programme, which according to him, has created a positive impact on the youngsters, which will eventually be extended to the overall development of sports in general.

In keeping with its tradition to award youngsters, who have excelled at all levels, St Ann Jamaica Bauxite Partners awarded grants to four who excelled in this year's programme.

The awards, which were presented to the students at the annual awards ceremony, will cover books and other educational expenses.

Awardees were Neville Phillips and Alwayne Simms for being the most valuable players in cricket while Babaney Gooden and Bevanay Ingram were awarded for being most outstanding in netball.

Other outstanding awardees on the day included Waynette Dixon and Trishana Reid, who were rewarded for most goals, Ranji Francis and Shavoy Thompson for most runs. Neville Phillips and Chavaughn Cunningham were rewarded for most wickets.

Goodwill netball league

The Community Goodwill Committee will stage its 19th Open Netball League competition next month with an opening rally on Saturday, October 4, at Overton Plaza. Starting time will be 10 a.m.

As the name suggests, the competition is geared towards fostering discipline, solidarity and goodwill through recreational sports and continued development of our youths.

All clubs/organisations are eligible to participate. Fifteen players can be registered. The entry fee for this competition is $3,000 and the closing date for entries is September 27.

Farriers win RFF league

Farriers (Blacksmiths) won the 2008 Racing Fraternity Football League last Sunday when they clipped Assistant Trainers 1-0 in the final before a fair-sized crowd at the Ironside ground, Gregory Park.

After an evenly contested first half, in which both teams created their fair share of chances, Farriers got the all-important goal in the 30th minute when Trevor 'Popeye' Barr netted from a Peter 'Metro' Dixon cross.

Barr chipped the ball into the goal, much to the delight of his teammates and their supporters, giving Farriers their second title since 2002. They won the inaugural competition as Blacksmiths that year.

In the third-place playoff which preceded the final, Owners beat KO champions CTL 2-0.

CTL had beaten Grooms 1-0 in the Knockout final at Ironside the previous Thursday to retain the trophy. This was due to a 30th-minute strike by centre forward Nicholas McKenzie.

Meanwhile, in the presentation of trophies and prizes, Farriers and CTL were presented with the league and KO trophies respectively, while Richard Taylor of Assistant Trainers won the MVP of the league award.

CTL's Kevin Wallace and Orane Buchanan were joint winners of the award for most goals in the league (four each), while Assistant Trainers claimed the most disciplined team award and Security the best dressed award.

Two special awards went to referees Errol Morgan and Basil Salmon. Trophies were presented by Laurence Heffes of Heffes Sales, the competition's main sponsor.

Unique Ballers, Lady Avalanche face off

Trelawny's Unique Ballers will face reigning back-to-back female champions Inner-city Lady Avalanche in their first grand final encounter of the Loctite Adhesive/Western Basketball Association Female Basketball League.

Both teams recorded dominant victories in last weekend's preliminary finals, which set up tomorrow's grand final, set to start at 7:00 p.m. at Montego Cricket Club.

Having only lost one match this season, number one team Unique Ballers go into this weekend's match-up with a slight edge over their opponents, Lady Avs, who have lost two.

In addition, both teams go into the match with a 1-1 head-to-head record and will no doubt be seeking to capitalise on their past success against each other.
