Mullings' two-month ban stands
published: Saturday | September 20, 2008

The full commission on Thursday upheld its decision to suspend jockey Oneil Mullings for his involvement in an altercation with Donovan Alvaranga, on the morning of Thursday, July 17, at Caymanas Park.

Alvaranga was injured by Mullings after a machete was brought into play.

As a result, Mullings was slapped with a two-month ban by the Jamaica Racing Com-mission (JRC) at a hearing on September 4, at Winchester Road, but no action was taken against Alvaranga.

Further submissions

Unhappy with the judgement, the Jamaica Jockey Guild requested a meeting with the com-mission on Thursday, September 11.

At this meeting the com-mission heard further evidence from Jockey Guild president, Ian Spence, and written state-ments from trainer Solomon Sharpe and jockey Shane Ellis, who were all present on the day.

The commission also received a submission from attorney- at-law, Jeffrey Mordecai, as to the appli-cability of Rule 17 and 255A to any sentence imposed by the commission.

At the end of the September 11 sitting, the commission reserved judgement until Thursday.

After reviewing the case, the full commission ruled that Mullings' two-month sus-pension (effective September 4) will stand, but an investigation will be held into the conduct of Alvaranga, who is an associate of a prominent racing family.
