Garvey hunt Central's scalp
published: Saturday | September 20, 2008

Adrian Frater, News Editor

Western Bureau:

Champions Garvey Maceo, which have not seen any action since their opening day 1-0 win against Kemps Hill, will be among the teams on show this afternoon when the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup resumes, with 36 games spanning all 12 competing zones, all set to begin at 3:30 p.m.

The Jeffrey Hewitt-coached Garvey Maceo will be lacing up against their Zone I counterparts, Central, which started their campaign with a surprise 0-2 loss to Tacius Golding, which have been the Cinderella of the group for many years. In light of their first game results, the champions should win easily.

"Regardless of the opponent, we will be taking every game seriously," Hewitt told The Gleaner after his team's win against Kemps Hill. "In a competitive zone like ours, one or two points could make a big difference in the final analysis."

While Garvey Maceo played well as a unit against Kemps Hill, Hewitt will be hoping that the likes of Daniel Callaghan, Mikhail Howell and Keniel King, who all got scoring opportunities in the first game but did not make them count, will be a lot sharper on Central High's home turf today.

Interesting encounters

Based on the first week results, other games that should generate keen interest are the big Montego Bay Zone A derby between Herbert Morrison and St James High at Jarrett Park, the Zone B clash between brash newcomers Hopewell High and Frome Technical and the Munro against Lacovia Zone E showdown at Munro.

In the Montego Bay derby, St James High, who were dominant in their 1-1 draw against Cornwall College; and Herbert Morrison, which lost 1-2 to Maldon and then bounced back with a 2-0 win against new-comers Spot Valley, the Pastor Hugh Solomon-coached St James High should start overwhelming favourites.

While Herbert Morrison appear ordinary with players such as Trevor Ferguson, Jason Marshall and Mario Leslie, the St James team look quite ominous with seasoned footballers such as Allan Ottey, Nicholi Barrett and Ajohn Barker, who all played key roles as their team advanced from the zone last year.
