Clubs roll out stars for limited overs semis
published: Saturday | September 20, 2008

Melburne's Carlton Baugh and St Catherine CC's Danza Hyatt.

A number of Jamaica and West Indies players will be on parade today in the semi-finals of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) limited overs cricket competition, which will take place in east Kingston, at the Kensington Oval, and in St Catherine at Chedwin Park.

In the Chedwin Park semi-final, champions Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), with West Indies representatives Carlton Baugh Jr, Nikita Miller and Donovan Pagon, will line up against surprise qualifiers Portland Cricket Association.

Impressive squad

At Kensington, national two-day champions, St Catherine Cricket Club, with Tamar Lambert and Danza Hyatt in their line-up, will take on St Elizabeth Cricket Association with Shawn Findlay and Brenton Parchment.

In the Melbourne-Portland match-up, it is anticipated that Melbourne will come out on top, given their impressive squad.

In addition to the above-mentioned big three, the team include youthful Yannick Elliot and André McCarthy, and standout pacers, Sheldon Smith and Denver Passley.

Portland, however, should not be written off as while they do not possess big name players, they are a rugged outfit and possess a never-say-die attitude. The Portlanders will look to veteran all-rounder Carl Brissett and former Jamaica College schoolboy, Oliver Walker, for inspiration.

Play their best

Over at Kensington, St Catherine will enter the match-up slight favourites, given their impressive track record at this stage of national competitions, but will have to play their best cricket of the season if they are to get the better of St Elizabeth, who are hungry for a national title.

St Catherine, in addition to Lambert and Hyatt, will look to pacer André Russell, regional youth representative Shacoya Thomas, Junior Stewart and their tried and proven spin twin of Odean and Bevon Brown.

St Elizabeth, on the other hand, will look to leg-spinner Alton Beckford, and Davian Davidson to lend support to Findlay and Parchment. - Jermaine Lannaman
