Jamaicans mull Phillips' future

Some Jamaicans are already speculating on what action should be taken by People's National Party President Portia Simpson Miller in relation to the position of Dr Peter Phillips after her re-election to that post on the weekend.

Yesterday, in Cross Roads, Kingston, only three of 20 people said Simpson Miller should retain Dr Phillips, her defeated challenger for the party presidency, in the shadow Cabinet.

Though no one wanted his or her name on record, the comments flowed.

"Keep him," said a woman who said she was a nurse. "He is experienced and we need that for the betterment of the country."

Another woman standing next to her held a different view.

"Portia, get rid of your enemies. Let the young ones take their place," she said.

A young man agreed.

"Weed them out. They are not with you, so why keep them?" he said.

His woman companion said: "It's not the first he has challenged her for presidency and if she continues to embrace him, he may once again in the future contest her leadership."

A beaming Rastafarian said: "Let him conscience get him."
