The Editor, Sir:I would like to concur with the views put forward by Mr L. White on honouring the heroes. While I, too, am glad with the per-formances of our athletes and the level of national unity, joy and pride that they were able to evoke among our citizens, we have to exercise a bit of wisdom and level-headedness in re-warding them. Amid the many ramblings of what should be done, I read of plans to rename the stadium in Trelawny. Is it to say that if we have another fantastic performance, in a few years, from a Kingston-based athlete, that moves would be made to rename the National Stadium?
Substantial value
The creation of a Hall of Fame is a good idea. Also, the provision of an item that would be of some substantial value to the athletes' daily living as an indication of the recognition of the people of Jamaica would be quite appropriate. Let us, however, remember that there are persons in the very same areas where these athletes come from whose bed is a slab of concrete, their roof the sky above, and this morning don't even know where breakfast is coming from.
However, to continue, I asked my co-worker: Is the country going to give a house and top-of-the-line car to all athletes and rename some institution in honour of all our athletes this year and the years to come? Bear in mind we are, by doing these actions, setting a pre-cedent. Also, I believe there are many Bolts and Powells out there waiting to be discovered, nurtured and guided to victory. Hence, 20 years from now, all stadiums and sports parks will be renamed, given that they perform in the stellar way that Usain, Asafa, Kerron and our other Olympians have.
Unfortunate
In addition, it is unfortunate to see that the Para-Olympic games, which took place immediately after the Olympic games, did not receive an equal amount of coverage and support ... are they not athletes as well?
No matter what the Govern-ment chooses to do, I pray that we all remember that we were all created equal in the sight of God and that we are encouraged to be men of humility.
I am, etc.,
