No to further bauxite mining
published: Monday | September 22, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I read with disgust, the Jamaican Government's plan to further mine bauxite in St Ann. How could it even entertain the thought of such a partnership with the United States (US) and China, when the US has been chastising China for snapping up all of Africa's resources? Isn't America complaining how China is conducting illegal logging in Africa? Now you welcome them to come and take your resources?

Substandard

China is hell-bent on world domination and superpower status and, if that means collaborating with every little island and every crevice in every country to form alliances, they will do just that. It also means that they will come to you to do business while they really don't care about you.

People who have draconian one-child-per-couple laws and raze poor villages to make way for their 'Birds Nest' for Olympics show they do not even care about their people. Almost every product coming out of China is tainted or substandard.

Deforestation

I am totally against this move. It is through the rape of a continent why so many of us are in the Indies and other diaspora. Don't knowingly invite them to come and do it again. Are you all thinking long term when there isn't any more bauxite to be had? Lots of people will just become unemployed and you'll just try to find some other natural resource to destroy.

You promise to find solutions. Mining bauxite and deforestation in beautiful St Ann is not it. Go back to the drawing board.

I am, etc.,

W. HAUGHTON
