Defining role of the don
published: Monday | September 22, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Has Colonel MacMillan lost his mind? Maybe there is some matter of definition that needs clarification. The term don has been borrowed from the Italian idea of the boss, usually associated with the Mafia and popularised in Jamaica by the film the Godfather. The term don, invariably, is linked to a boss in charge of illegal activity, extortion, violence and intimidation. Therefore, anyone purporting to be a don, advocates, supports and has been involved in such activity, has forfeited certain rights; like the right to walk the streets. Therefore, for Minister MacMillan to suggest that the don has certain rights, such as a say in legislation, is ridiculous.

I think it would be better if the members of the affected community were allowed to comment on the crime bills. That way, the committees would then get a better understanding of the real problems. Instead, we have another leader who feels that legitimising the underworld forces is the way. Sounds like the August Town treaty. Remember how that big public relations event for the signing went awry and was delayed because the cowardly dons wouldn't come out without their guns and were afraid they would be arrested?

I am, etc.,

Disillusioned
