'Charisma like no other leader'
published: Monday | September 22, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Over the last two months, the media have been awash with criticisms of comrade Portia Simpson Miller's inability to manage and unify the People's National Party, glibly carrying the line of the "Arise and Renew" team. Indeed, there have been few analysts, save for Dice Crawford and Dr Paul Ashley, who have pointed to the need for the Peter Phillips camp to play a role in the unification process.

As a matter of fact, Dr Ashley, in his typical, straightforward manner, made an assertion that few journalists have been bold enough to do, that is, that the Solid as a Rock Team has remained as stubborn as a rock in their desire to have Peter Phillips as president of the PNP. Now that the delegates have spoken, respect needs to be shown to comrade Portia Simpson Miller.

Inspiring and motivating people

The lady has charm, magnetism and charisma like no other leader since Michael Manley. This is not a quality that is to be underestimated. In fact, it is critical in a leader. Leadership involves inspiring and motivating people. I am sure that Dr Peter Phillips could never inspire, motivate and convince the populace that he would be the better alternative to lead the country in light of his struggle to convert his managerial skills in the PNP to delectability at the party level.

Mrs Simpson Miller has inspired a number of young people to enter politics; we see their fresh, youthfulness in the Senate and in the House. Dr Phillips' message that the party leader did not extend the olive branch and could not unify just did not find favour with the delegates. His followers have followed a loser twice. Hopefully, now they will open their hearts to embrace the two-time winner. Sis P, do what you have to do. We love you. Respect is due every time?

I am, etc.,
