Champion trainer Kirk Ziadie and jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan posted Jamaican stakes triumphs in Calder horse racing on Saturday afternoon.
Ziadie's four-year-old colt Cenzontle won The Vid Stakes turf race under jockey Ariel Smith, and Bridgmohan guided the five-year-old It's a Bird to victory in the Plagiarize Stakes.
Cenzontle received a well-timed ride from Smith to win the US$50,000 turf race over 7-1/2 furlongs.
Racing eighth down the backstretch and moving up to sixth leaving the far turn, Smith roused Cenzontle for a winning run - three wide - entering the home stretch.
He grabbed the lead inside the last furlong and scored by half-length in one minute 28.48 seconds for Cenzontle's first stakes win, defeating the 8-1 bet Mr Silver under leading jockey Pascacio Lopez.
The result was pleasing for Ziadie as Cenzontle had a medical problem and was racing for the first time in three months.
"He had some entrapment in his throat, so we had him undergo surgery and then let him rest," Ziadie told reporters.
Second win
Ziadie, on course to repeating as champion trainer, secured a second win on the card when his entry Gaara was promoted to first in the US$22,400 third race over 6-1/2 furlongs.
The 4-1 second-favourite Sincero was first past the winning post, but was disqualified for causing interference to another horse and Gaara was elevated to the winning spot at attractive odds of 11-1.
The win was Ziadie's 39th of the season and, with four weeks remaining in the 2008 meet, he is six ahead of Edward Plesa (33), with Martin Wolfson (31) and 10-time champion William White (28) also in the hunt.
The season ends on October 19.
Bridgmohan used It's a Bird to score an easy win in the US$55,000 Plagiarize Stakes over 1-1/2 miles. He led the eight-horse field and won comfortably by five lengths in 2:37.23.
Jamaican trainer Cleveland Suckie was also a winner on the card.
The former jockey used his three-year-old colt Ocean Cruise to win the US$6,650 first race over a mile and 70 yards in 1:48.65.
Jockey Eddie Dominguez finished fast with the second-favourite Ocean Cruise and posted a come-from-behind win by three quarters of a length at odds of 3-2.
