WESTERN BUREAU:
OLD HARBOUR High created one of the biggest upsets of the 2008 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup season yesterday when they surprised reigning champions Garvey Maceo 1-0 at Old Harbour.
While the win was the first for Old Harbour, who had a loss and a draw in their previous two outings, the defeat was the first for Garvey Maceo, who started this season on the back of an unbeaten season last year.
In other noteworthy performances yesterday, St Elizabeth went on a goal spree, scoring a big 9-0 win against Balaclava.
Widened lead
In another game in the group, Lacovia widened their lead atop the standings with a 1-0 victory over Maggotty, which lifted them to 13 points.
Over in Zone B, Rusea's extended their 100 per cent win record to four games, when they clipped Anchovy 1-0 on their home turf in Lucea, courtesy of goals by skipper Damain Thompson (penalty) and Rolando Kerr.
"It was a fairly good game and we must give some credit to our opponents for a spirited performance," said Rusea's coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams. "Nonetheless, the important thing is that we got maximum points from the game and kept our winning record intact."
Infringement
Rusea's took the lead 10 minutes into the game when the referee saw an infringement in the Anchovy goal area and awarded a penalty to Rusea's. Skipper Thompson made no mistake from the spot.
Anchovy drew level 10 minutes into the second through Anthony Drummond and looked like hanging on to a draw. However, in the 80th minute, Kerr breached the Anchovy defence and fired in for Rusea's, making the final score 2-1.
In the big game in Zone C, between former champions Godfrey Stewart and the usually competitive Petersfield, who are now being coached by Godfrey Stewart's former coach Carl 'Long Life' Palmer, it was a case of missed chances galore as the teams played out a 0-0 draw.
In the first half, Godfrey Stewart got many opportunities. Enrico Levine found himself with clear shots on goal twice but directed his shots wide.
Thunderous shot
Meanwhile, Joshane Foster struck the crossbar from 35 yards out with a thunderous shot.
Petersfield had their moment in the third minute of the game when Alpheus McPherson struck a fierce shot, which eluded the goalkeeper but was cleared off the goal line.
The second half was characterised but more poor finishing as both teams created chances but few accurate shots were made.
