  • Solar system

It's almost 2009 and we in Jamaica are still experiencing real hardship under the hands of our only real electricity provider, JPS. This absence of competition I believe is the real reason for this ever increasing customer abuse.

Jamaica is rich with natural resources, the sun being one of them, so why can't the Government introduce a much more affordable widespread solar system to suit the pocket of the ordinary people. I had a quotation of $800,000 from a reputable company, which means it would take approximately 12 years to break even.

  • Power hunger

It is obvious from the actions of Mr Phillips and Mrs Henry-Wilson and other Phillips supporters that former Prime Minister Simpson Miller was right when she said they were not supportive of her.

Power hunger is really a terrible thing to bring dissension in the party to that extent. She was never given the chance to lead, considering that the support was not there.

  • NHT urged to revise loan policy

I was quite happy when I read the NHT advertisement about energy saver loans. Due to the increasing cost of electricity, I had researched the possibility of installing a solar energy system at my home. Even though it would be worthwhile to switch to this alternative source of energy, the cost at the time made it prohibitive. At last I thought that the advertised loan from the NHT would be the way to go to obtain the solar system.

Upon further research on the NHT's website, I learnt that only persons who have never had a loan from the NHT would qualify for the energy saver loan to install a solar energy system. I am sure that the NHT must have been aware that a large number of the low and middle income homeowners in Jamaica would have had to have borrowed from them in order to purchase a house.

I am urging the NHT and the minister of housing to revisit this policy as it clearly disqualifies a large number of homeowners. I strongly believe that it should be made available to all NHT contributors, whether or not they received a NHT loan in the past.
