  • Skittles semis tomorrow

    Rowe's Strikers advanced to the semi-finals of the Wray and Nephew Premier League skittles competition last Sunday when they clipped Cherry's Strikers 6-5 in a crucial match at the Mystix Sports Bar, Hagley Park Road. The win means both teams are level on 24 points, but Rowe's Strikers finished ahead of Cherry's Strikers by virtue of three victories over them in league play.

    Eastern All-Stars topped the league with an unbeatable 36 points, while Mystix completed the list of semi-finalists with 22 points and a match in hand against lowly Meadowvale, winners of the Pattex Cup earlier this season. Mystix have vowed to win this competition in honour of departed teammate Allan Brown, who died in a motor vehicle accident in Portmore two weeks ago. The match, along with the opening Major League semi-final between Waltham and Mister C, will be played at Cherry's Strikers home table at Hughenden Plaza, Molynes Road.

  • Colin Fagan domino final

    Unbeaten Passagefort United and Westchester United will meet in the final of the Colin Fagan domino competition for Portmore-based teams tomorrow at Ken's Wildflower, Port Henderson Road, starting at 11 a.m. The champions will receive $50,000 and a trophy donated by the Member of Parliament for South East St Catherine, Colin Fagan. The runners-up will secure $25,000. Last Sunday, Ken's Wildflower defeated Garveymeade by 35 points to win the third-place play-off at Passagefort. Ken's Wildflower thus secured $10,000 and Garveymeade $5,000 for having placed fourth. Tomorrow's final will be followed by the presentation of trophies and prizes, scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

  • Ken's Wildflower lift President's Cup

    Ken's Wildflower scored a five-wicket win over Colours International to lift the President's Cup in the RBTT-sponsored Portmore Metropolitan mid-season cricket final.

    Batting first, Colours International were restricted to 125-8 off their allotted 30 overs.

    Richard Johnson top scored with 37, while Kerry Scott chipped in with an undefeated 34. Ken's Wildflower's Lloyd Rattray took 2-24.

    In reply, Ken's Wildflower cruised to 129 for 5 off 27.1 overs with Kirk Brooks leading the way with 30 and wicketkeeper/batsman Junior Stewart 23. Richard Johnson 2-37 was Colours' most successful bowler.

    At the end of the game, Richard Maise of the sponsors, RBTT, presented the Charles Simpson President's Trophy to Denworth Barber, captain of Ken's Wildflower.

  • Treat for Kellis athletes

    The management of Kellis High School track and field team will be hosting a special treat for its athletes on October 2. Delloreen Ennis-London, the Osaka World Championship 100m hurdles bronze medallist, will be there to give a motivational talk to the young group, which is being managed by Laurie Foster.

    According to a release, the team, under its new management, has sought the support of two sprint consultants to assist on a part-time basis - Michael Fray, the 1968 Olympic 200m finalist, and former STETHS sprint king Carlos Samuels.

    Training for the 2009 season has started with about 35 boys.

  • St Mary TT tournament

    The St Mary Parish Table Tennis tournament will be played today at St Mary High School auditorium.

    There will be several events for players from the parish and a few open events for islandwide players.

    The main parish events will be the men's and women's singles, which will be used to decide parish champions for the year. There will be junior events for boys and girls singles in age-group categories Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19. In addition, there will be male and female 19 and over singles events.

    The open events will be men's B for players with under 2,000 rating points and women's B for players with under 1,450 rating points.

    Registration will begin at 8 a.m. while action will serve off with play in the Under-13 boys and girls singles at 9 a.m.

    Entry fees for the parish events are $300 for seniors and $150 for juniors while the fee for the open events is $500. Juniors will be allowed to pay half price for one adult event.

    The winner of the men's B will receive a cash prize of $6,000, the runner-up $3,000 and $1,000 to each third-place finisher. The women's B winner will pocket $3,000 with $1,500 going to the runner-up.

  • WATA Tennis Championship

    The WATA Amateur Tennis Championship will get under way today and run until October 4 at the Liguanea Club.

    This year's tournament, which is open to amateur players, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. today.

    The tournament will involve about 100 of the country's top amateur players. Tournament director Llockett McGregor is optimistic that this tournament will bring a new level of excitement to the amateurs.

    The categories are men's class 1, 2, 3 and 4 and women's B.

  • Primary Championships at Oracabessa

    Mount Angus Primary whipped Three Hills Primary 4-0 as action continued in the JBB primary championships on Thursday at the James Bond Beach Complex, Oracabessa in St Mary.

    Milton Mills (first and fifth) and Omar Hermitt (37th and 40th) each netted a brace.

    On the netball court, the teams played to a 5-5 tie.

    Earlier this week, Donnington Primary, through four goals by Jannoy Nelson in the 21st, 28th, 30th and 35th minutes, beat Albion Mountain 4-2.

    Jabori Clarke scored a brace for the losers, netting in the fourth and 17th minutes.

    In the opening game of the day, Goshen easily beat Labyrinth 6-1. Romaine Walsh netted a hat-trick with goals in the 10th, 24th and 43rd minutes. Jevaugn Irons, Rameej Jackson and parish representative AljoWayne Edwards scored in the fifth, 35th and 50th minutes, respectively.

    On the netball court, the Albion Mountain Primary girls turned the tables, beating Donnington Primary 6-3.

    In game two, defending champions Goshen Primary defeated Labyrinth 5-1 while Gayle Primary easily got by Galina Primary 7-0. Kerodia Robinson scored five goals for Gayle.

    The competitions continue on Tuesday at the same venue.

  • MultiCare rolls out plans for October

    The MultiCare Foundation Sports Programme is preparing for the 2008-2009 academic year with coaching in a variety of sports.

    Coaching will be provided for the 31 MultiCare-assisted schools in east, west and central Kingston and Greater Portmore. The highlights will be the 'Train The Trainer Clinics' and the MultiCare Inter-Schools sports competitions.

    Next month, two 'Train The Trainers Clinics' will be held for physical education teachers from the MultiCare-assisted schools. The first will be in netball, and the second, volleyball. No dates have been set for these clinics.

    Both clinics are being held in preparation for the upcoming MultiCare Inter-Schools netball and volleyball competitions being held in November along with the MultiCare Inter-Schools football (boys) competition.

    Next year will see the 'Train The Trainers Basketball Clinic' in February, while the MultiCare Inter-Schools basketball competition and the MultiCare Inter-Schools football (girls) competition are slated for April. The MultiCare Track and Field Achievement Championships are scheduled for May.
