The Editor, Sir:I write in support of and as a follow-up to your Letter of the Day, on Tuesday, September 23, entitled 'Is this the One'?
The writer made reference to an "inspirational address" given by a past student of Meadowbrook High School in celebration of the school's 50th anniversary. The speaker opined that he had lived to see Martin Luther King's words "the mountains will be made low and the valleys exalted" come to pass by citing Barrack Obama's elevation to frontrunner for the presidential race to the White House, as a fitting example.
The writer went on to posit that our recent success at the Beijing games was largely due to the "stars" rising from the valleys (ghetto). His closing line was "The time has come when parents, irrespective of the place of birth of their little one, can, without reservation, ask God, "Is this the one?"
Disrespect
In light of the recent People's National Party presidential election and the reported disrespect meted out to Mrs Simpson Miller, I share, in part, the following email entitled 'Ten Questions God Won't Ask'.
1. God will not ask what type of car you drove. He will ask how many persons did you offer a ride while you were alive.
2. God will not ask what was the size of the house you lived in. He will ask how many persons did you offer shelter during your lifetime
3. God won't ask what is your job title. He will ask if you did your job to the best of your ability
4. God won't ask what neighbourhood you lived in. He will ask how did you treat your neighbour.
5. God won't ask what is the colour of your skin. He will ask what is the content of your character.
It is time to exorcise the ghosts of our colonial past and bury the empty prejudices that are stunting our collective progress. We are all God's children and each of us "is the one". The word is love.
I am, etc.,
