St George's, Excelsior in big clash

St George's College and Excelsior High, both unde-feated to date, will lock horns in a battle for sole leadership of Group E in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup at Winchester Park today.

Separated by the slimmest of margins in the goal difference category, a win for either team, though early, could have impli-cations for not only qualification to the Walker Cup, but the rest of the season as well.

Although the 'Light Blues' were quick out the gates scoring 10 goals in two games, the North Street team has struggled in its last two outings.

Primary concern

While they have managed to continue putting the ball into the back of the net, it is their defensive unit which will be their primary concern, having conceded five goals in the last two games.

In fact, George's were forced to come from behind on both occasions against Camperdown and Ardenne. Despite having the home advantage, St George's will scarcely want to take that approach against an Excelsior team that has conceded a meagre one goal in four games and seem to be getting better as the season progresses.

In the group's other games, Dunoon Technical will hope to keep touch with the leaders when they take on Camperdown at Vauxhall High School and Greater Portmore will host Ardenne at the Greater Portmore Sports Complex.

In group B, a surging Calabar who have a game in hand will look to move past Waterford, who lead them by a point in the standings, when the teams meet at Calabar.

St Mary's College will be hoping for their first win in two seasons when they host Donald Quarrie and Ascot will take on Pembroke Hall.

Over in Group A, Tivoli, looking to keep their unbeaten run intact, will travel to the Spanish Town Prison Oval when they face third-place Spanish Town.

Norman Manley, who lead the group with nine points, will tackle Campion, while Charlie Smith take on last-place Tarrant.
