St Georges and Tivoli in goalless stalemate
published: Monday | September 29, 2008

Gareth Davis Sr, Gleaner Writer

Despite getting numerous scoring opportunities, home team St Georges were held to a 0-0 draw by visitors Tivoli Gardens in the Digicel Premier League game at Lynch Park yesterday.

Tivoli enjoyed the better of the run of play in the first half through Dwight Heron, Steve Green, Kemar Mills and Roland Dean, who threatened the St Georges defense on numerous occasions. They were, however, denied by outstanding goalkeeping from Ralston Robinson.

But cheered on by a near capacity crowd, the home team slowly clawed their way back into the game through Daniel Shaw, Omar Henderson and captain Danian Reid, but poor finishing robbed them of an opener.

Reid was, however, substituted in the 42nd minute, making way for Donovan Davis.

The second half started with Tivoli kicking towards the hills and Georges toward the town of Buff Bay and it did not take long for the homesters to threaten their opponents' goal in the 55th minute, when Denroy Dennis made a pass from the left flank to Damian Harwood in the 18-yard box, but he headed over the crossbar.

Both teams had numerous chances before the final whistle was blown by referee Raymond Bogle, but poor finishing robbed them of an opening goal.

Easy chances

After the game Georges coach, Geoffrey Maxwell, said his team squandered several easy chances in front of goal.

"We desperately wanted to secure three points here today. But poor finishing robbed us of that opportunity. We now have to go back to the drawing board," he said.

Tivoli's assistant coach, Max Straw, explained that his team came in search of all three points and they were somewhat disappointed with the finish.

"We are in a spot of bother ... with three consecutive draws. It is really cause for concern and our forwards will have to deliver the goods in our next game," he said.
