The Obama tide
published: Saturday | October 4, 2008

Peter Espeut's contribution in yesterday's Gleaner ('Racism and race consciousness') was a timely reminder that Jamaicans at home need to be less overt in their response to American politics.

To hear of Jamaicans getting excited about Barack Obama's involvement in the race for the White House is laughable, but could also be counter-productive as whites tend not to want to vote for him if they perceive this as a worldwide 'black' thing.

In other words, we need to mind our own business at home!

Killing the unborn

Much outrage and shock have been expressed about the brutal murders of the young children of the nation. This outrage is shared by many well thinking individuals, and rightly so.

It is ironic, though, that in one breath many of us are indifferent and even agree to support the murder of the unborn children and, in another,r have pledged to do all they can to stop this wave of barbaric killing of our children.

Shouldn't we be equally horrified and pledge to prevent the killing of the unborn children?

Enact these laws

I am a Jamaican living in Dallas, Texas. It is very disgusting to read the everyday onslaught on our nation's children that are being sexually abused.

The Government of Jamaica has pledge its responsibility in protecting each and every citizen including the children. It is its obligation to enact the toughest laws now, not later, to bring these culprits to justice.

Here is an example: each child offender must stay in prison and never get parole; each child offender, if caught in the act, must be sentenced to hang; and each child offender that has children under the age of 18 must have their children given to foster care or under the supervision of the Government.

Please enact these laws immediately.
