Ken's Wildflower, Portsmouth battle

Mid-season champions Ken's Wildflower face Portsmouth in tomorrow's feature match in the Petcom/MegaMart Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League at Ken's Wildflower sports ground. Match time: 11 a.m.

In other matches tomorrow, Belmont Park take on MegaMart Development Squad at Lime Tree Oval while Washington CC renew their rivalry with Reid's Pen at Bridgeport sports ground.

Meanwhile, in a lone game today, Colours International play Belmont at the Bridgeport sports ground. All games begin at 11 a.m.

In games last week, Reid's Pen and Portsmouth secured important victories.

At Bridgeport, Reid's Pen beat MegaMart Development Squad by seven wickets. Scores: MegaMart Development, 170-9 (Earl Anglin, 35; Jermaine Gordon 3-20, Geoffrey Laing 2-23); Reid's Pen 171-3 (Ryan Francis 76, Robert Heron 49; Ramone Senior 2-24).

At Ken's Wildflower, Portsmouth whipped Washington CC by 111 runs. Scores: Portsmouth 186-4 (Carlos Green 51, David Bernard Jr 48 not out, Mario Downer 30); Washington CC 75 all out (Leroy Thompson 21; Bernard Jr, 4-24, Raymond Brown 2-11, Horace Stephens 2-5).

Wolmer's girls, St Anne's boys win badminton

The winners of the Eastern leagues, Wolmer's girls and St Anne's High boys, took the top spots in the Cable and Wireless All-Island Schools' Junior (Under-15) Badminton Championships.

In the finals played at G.C. Foster College last Saturday, both winners were impressive.

Wolmer's defeated Christiana 5-0 in the semis and outscored Haile Selassie, who beat them in the league, 3-2.

In boys' action, St Anne's High defeated defending champions DeCarteret College 3-2 in their first tie before blanking Campion College 3-0 in the final.

Campion, the Eastern Region runners-up, got to the final when the Western region winners, El Instituto de Mandevilla Prep, failed to show.

These championships were contested by the first and second-place teams from each of the Eastern and Western Leagues which comprised teams mainly from Manchester and the Corporate Area. In addition to high schools, this competition was also open to primary, all age and preparatory schools.

Frosts win TT crowns

Brother and sister Shayne and Kemolyn Frost, both students of St Mary High School, are this year's St Mary table tennis parish champions.

They won the titles at the second staging of the championships which were held at St Mary High School last Saturday.

Shayne, a national junior representative, retained the title he won at the inaugural staging last year while Kemolyn became the new women's champion.

All events were for players from inside the parish this time, unlike last year when there were also a few Open events for players from outside the parish.

Number 1 seed Shayne overpowered schoolmate Javed Cameron 4-0 in the men's singles final.

Number 2 seed Kemolyn clipped top seed Davene Buchanan 3-2 in the women's final. She had earlier defeated Felecia Fletcher 3-0 in semi-finals; Buchanan crushed Alexandria Nelson 3-0 in the other semi.

Shayne Frost was a triple champion as he defeated Cameron in both the Under-19 and Under-17 finals as well. In the Under-19s, he won 3-1 and in the Under-17s' 3-0.

Kemolyn Frost was a double champion, winning the Under-19 crown, beating Kashauna Graham 3-1.

In the girls' Under-17s, Buchanan nipped Kemolyn Frost 3-2.

Other winners - boys' Under-15: Andre Walsh blew away Miguel Gurdon 3-0; girls' Under-15: Kashauna Graham edged Bridgette Watson 3-2; boys' Under-13: Lionel Hall pipped Shawn Hamilton 3-2; girls Under-13: Shanae Taylor outlasted Bridgette Watson 3-2.

Byfield lifts chess title

Two-time defending champion National Master Geoffrey Byfield walked away with top honours for the third straight year at the end of the 2008 staging of the Harold Chan Chess Open.

The tournament, which was played at the Campion College Auditorium last weekend, saw Byfield topping the Open section with 5.5 points from six games. He scored a final-round draw against National Master Malaku Lorne.

Second place went to Lorne who finished on 4.5 points, while third was shared among Jamaica Chess Federation president Ian Wilkinson, Super National Master Duane Rowe, National Master Russel Porter, Valence Jordan and Zachary Ramsay, with four points each.

The top female player prize went to Annesha Smith, the best junior to Ramsay and the best rural player was Jordan.

The section for players rated under 1600 was won by Calabar's Ramone Graham, who scored 5.5 points. Two unrated players, Roggae Lewis and Dominic Gordon, tied for second with five points each.

The best Under-10 and Under-12 awards were won by Douglas Byfield, the Under-14 prize went to Timothy Henry, while the best new player award went to Gordon.

Volleyball season set to start

The start of the 2008/2009 Volleyball Club's League will serve off with the President's Rally on October 25. The rally will be held over two days at the G.C. Foster College. The Club League serves off on November 8. The fixtures are being prepared and will be released soon.

Retreat beat Oracabessa

Retreat Primary defeated Oracabessa 4-0 in action from the James Bond Beach Primary School football championships on Wednesday.

Captain Keneil Drummond scored a brace in the 30th and 40th minutes of the match. Stefan Perry in the 11th minute and Delano Hannigan 20th supported.

On the netball court, Oracabessa Primary girls turned the tables on their Retreat opponents with a 7-3 victory.

Donnington Primary came up winners in the football/netball games played on Tuesday.

Jannoy Nelson scored a hat-trick while Joie Moodie supported with a lone strike as Donnington were propelled to a 4-0 victory over Free Hill Primary.

On the netball court, Donnington Primary beat Free Hill 5-3.

Passagefort United are Colin Fagan domino champs

Passagefort United defeated Westchester United 300-279 in the final to win the inaugural Colin Fagan domino competition for Portmore teams at Ken's Wildflower, Port Henderson Road, last Sunday.

Passagefort went through the season unbeaten. The $50,000 winners' prize and trophy were presented to the winning captain, Linval Thompson, by the Member of Parliament from South East St Catherine, Colin Fagan.

Westchester United outplayed

Passagefort in the first half to lead by all of 27 points (152-125) at the break. After the interval, Passagefort came into their own, chipping away at the lead and eventually going by their opponents in the last 60 points. Thereafter, it was smooth sailing, as they moved away to win by 21 points.

Westchester secured the $25,000 cash prize for second while Ken's Wildflower picked up $10,000 for third and Garveymeade $5,000 for fourth. Fagan said he was pleased with the competition and pledged his continued support for next year's competition which he promised would be bigger and better.

Wray and Nephew skittles

Eastern All-Stars defeated Mystix 6-5 in an exciting Wray & Nephew Premier League skittles semi-final at Bejon's Sports Bar, Hughenden Plaza, last Sunday.

After both teams were locked at 3-3, Mystix raced into a 5-3 lead to be on the brink of victory. But Eastern fought back strongly through Nehemiah 'Fatta' Henry, Keith Barrett and T. Murphy to win a hard-fought contest and advance to the final.

The competition takes a break tomorrow for the funeral of the late Mystix player Allan Brown, who was killed in a motor vehicle accident in Portmore three weeks ago. The funeral will take place at the Braeton Seventh-day Adventist Church, starting at 1 p.m.
