Titchfield now joint second
published: Saturday | October 4, 2008

Versel Thompson, Gleaner Writer

TITCHFIELD HIGH moved to joint second position in Group L (a) of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup football competition after registering a 1-0 victory over Fair Prospect at Carder Park on Thursday.

In the other match in the group, leaders Port Antonio High were held to a goaless draw by their hosts, Happy Grove High, at Hector's River.

Titchfield, after winning their second match of the season, now join Fair Prospect on eight points from five matches.

Port Antonio remain at the top of the group with 12 points from six matches.

Dominated play

Titchfield got the all-important goal from Craig Smith in the 20th minute when he latched on to a Royan Rodney pass to beat goalkeeper Dwight Benjamin from the edge of the six-yard box.

Titchfield dominated play in the first half, squandering five easy opportunities to score from inside the 18-yard box, as the boys from Fair Prospect looked a bit jaded after playing without ace striker Jermaine Ming, whose foot was broken during their home match against Happy Grove, which was blown off on Tuesday.

Titchfield continued their dominance in the second half but, once again, they failed to finish properly after several opportunities were created.

One of the most glaring misses came when Carlton Campbell, their number 10, dispatched two defenders.

With the goalkeeper at his mercy, he fired into his path, only to see the ball rebounding off Benjamin and back into play.

Fair Prospect came into their own late in the second half but failed to get the ball into the back of the net.

While Fair Prospect's coach, Robert Hamilton, lamented the level of officiating as the reason for his team's loss, Titchfield's coach, Oral McKenzie, welcomed the victory.

"I am very happy for the victory as we now have a chance to advance from the group. But, we need to score more goals at this level of the competition," he said.
