The Jockey Club Stakes overnight allowance race over 1400 metres is today's feature at Caymanas Park, offering a purse of $630,000.
Eight starters have been declared and, with several of them showing good recent form, keen competition is anticipated.
The field includes the very fit MAGNIFICO, who bids for his fourth consecutive victory, but seemingly has extra to find now up against formidable opposition.
Other recent winners in the line-up are ISLA, LOVINGGOOD and MR BLAIR. The Anthony Nunes-trained filly ISLA got up on the line to deny LA'S DANCER over this trip on September 24 but, like MAGNIFICO, she faces an uphill task in present company.
LOVINGGOOD and MR BLAIR, however, are among the top contenders and, along with QUEEN OF MY HEART and GRACE MARIE, should decide the outcome.
LOVINGGOOD looked much improved when slamming rivals in a fast-run 1600-metre race on August 9, covering the distance in the smart time of 1:38.4, winning by 6-1/2 lengths from PLEASURE FLIGHT and GOOD HOPE. The three-year-old filly, from the stables of Gary Subratie, continues to please in her preparation and, with only 51.0kg, will only go down fighting.
It should be recalled, however, that the last time LOVINGGOOD met MR BLAIR, she was beaten into third place over 1300 metres on July 26. They renew rivalry on identical terms and, while conceding that LOVINGOOD has improved since, MR BLAIR will find the trip ideal and is fit enough to rebound from his recent loss to PRIME MINISTER over 2000 metres.
While respecting the chances of MR BLAIR and LOVINGOOD, the one best equipped to pull it off must be GRACE MARIE, who steps down from open allowance company to vie for this trophy.
Encountered traffic problems
Trained by Barrington Rambally, GRACE MARIE is out for the first time since July 5 when finishing six lengths sixth to MUCHO GUSTO over 1200 metres, a race in which she encountered traffic problems.
Prior to that, she was a fast-finishing second to subsequent dual grade one winner CHADMAN over this trip on May 31 and also occupied similar placings behind the talented three-year-old colt, ROYAL IMAGE, and RIGMAROLE, in separate races.
Although out for the first time since July 5, GRACE MARIE will do so in good condition. Back in action with a mere 51.0kg and competent 2.0kg claiming apprentice Rayan Wilson aboard, this consistent four-year-old filly by Hail Orphan out of Bubble Gum Hottie looks the right choice.
She has good pace and the ability to come from behind as well and, with less to do in present company, GRACE MARIE should win from MR BLAIR and LOVINGGOOD.
Other firm fancies on the card are PEACE BY PEACE in the second race, down-in-class GUIDING LIGHT in the third, ITALQUEEN to repeat in the seventh and MUCHO GUSTO to make amends for his near miss in last Saturday's Reggae Trophy by landing the eighth race ahead of EXPLOSVE PEAK.
