Yvonnie Bailey- Davidson

Dear Counsellor:

I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I sometimes forget to take my medication and lose my self-control. I am worried about my health.

- Maizie

Dear Maizie:

Bipolar disorder affects one per cent of the general population. People with mild bipolar disorder have behaviours that are similar to normal individuals. Many times the patient doesn't recognise that something is wrong and so, discontinues the medication.

You need to take your medication daily as well as vitamin B complex and omega oil. Put your pills in a handbag so you will see them when you go out.

Another option is to place the tablet container atop the fridge so you can see them each morning. Place a sticker marked 'Remember your tablets' on the fridge as a reminder. Ask your relatives to help to remind you as well.

Taking your medication will help you to function normally. Many people have chronic illnesses like diabetes mellitus and hypertension and have to take their medications.

Call Dr Yvonnie Bailey-Davidson at 978-8602 or email questions to yvonniebd@hotmail.com.
