Thursdaytalk - HOTTEST TOPICS ON THE COCKTAIL CIRCUIT
published: Thursday | October 9, 2008

Taking over

1. Some are fed up as she keeps inserting herself in the midst of the celebrations. They point to her usurping the role of MC recently, she being the head cook and bottle-washer-in-chief at the big bling.

Where is she?

2 Is the mistress in residence at the unofficial, official residence?

Where was protocol?

3 Observers are asking why was the prime minister reduced to the role of a prop last Saturday at the National Stadium at what was clearly a national fiasco. And where were the protocol people to advise against this ineffectual posture; scantily and inappropriately clad women assigned as escorts to the athletes; images of slaves pulling chariots; at least one athlete reporting being assaulted by an overzealous security officer; others complaining of being cordoned off from the celebrations, coming after a day of being paraded through the streets of Kingston with no regard for their welfare.

Lesson not learnt

4 First, there were the grand celebrations that were advised against for that particular venue that saw the turf being damaged, the office was closed, and its state blamed on Tropical Storm Gustav. As if the lesson was not learnt, yet another gala was hosted, at the venue, which could also jeopardise the status of the office.

Unannounced portfolios

5 Some say there are clearly two new but unannounced portfolios. One is the Minister of His Own Affairs, and the other: Minister of Bhuttofication.

Support for 'General'

6 The people trust the integrity of the 'General' and have faith in his ability to safeguard the interest of the nation, not politicians of either stripe!

Wanted: more control

7 Industry insiders are saying more control is needed, not less, as already there are reports of abuse of the special funds, with stories that drawdowns were made to fund US$800 per night suites in Beijing.

Just talk!

8 Some private sector players are complaining that all the pre-election talk about less bureaucracy was just that - talk. They claim, since then, the bureaucracy has got more convoluted.

What went wrong?

9 What really happened at the well-intentioned $15,000 per plate celebration that caused some guests to be accosting waiters to secure a bite?
