Our children are under attack
published: Friday | October 10, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I have decided to add my voice (venting opinions, ideas, concerns, evaluation) to the gruesome reality of the increasing level of crime and violence against children. It is not exaggerating to say our children are under attack; figures reveal 71 murders last year and 54 to date.

A nation's level of civility is judged by the way it treats the most vulnerable in the society. With these grim murder statistics and other violence meted out to children, we have failed miserably in this regard.

It cannot be overemphasised that children are the future, our future. Increasing their security is increasing our own. We will develop, progress and prosper as a nation when we protect, nurture, culture, and educate our children and create the right environment and opportunities for them to reach their full and true potential.

Outcry

Concerns, outcry have been raised and heard in many sections of the society. The task force established by Parliament is commendable and will make its recommendations.

Any measures to combat this scourge must begin with increased awareness and vigilance at the individual, communal and national level. Children are generally trusting of adults, and parents and guardians have a key role in this regard.

I am proposing a continuous programme of public education aimed at increasing awareness for the protection of children. This would be similar to 'Hurricane Watch'. Possible names for such a programme could be 'Child Alert', 'Special Child', 'Stay On Alert'. SPECIAL, which translates as Strategies to Protect Every Child. Increasing Awareness and Learning, and STAY ON ALERT: Safety Tips Applicable to You On Awareness, Looking out, Expecting, and Reacting Timely.

I am, etc.,
