THE EDITOR, Sir:What I would like to see done with these Olympic athletes is for them to be united together in a church - for a special service of thanksgiving for God's continuous guidance and protection on them. And that by God's help and enabling grace, they will create a resounding impact on the society and the world - in terms of moral conduct and principle.
There are many young people who are wrapped up and tangled up in violence. They need to throw away their weapons and take example from these athletes. They need to know that something good is waiting for them; and something good can happen to them, and that violence, drugs and death are not the answer.
Just like how we need food, shelter and clothing to survive, what is badly needed in the lives of most young people is humility, courtesy, patience, tolerance. I could use one word: godliness. Without these things, it's going to be difficult for them to be good citizens. Without godliness, maybe we will see more guns, knives, machetes; more drugs, brutality and death. But let's hope not.
I think our athletes and all of us should continue going down on our knees and praying to God for this country. It's time for us to open our eyes and see what's taking place around us.
I am, etc.,
