The Editor Sir:I must add my disappointment with the way the Planning Committee welcomed our athletes home and guided them into how to represent themselves, as well as our country. First, all the glory must be given to all participants, which includes the Paralympians. No sign of these specially challenged individuals were in sight during any of the float parades or welcome functions. This is not all about Usain, its about the TEAM.
Second, while we speak to our code of conduct both in our dress and our behaviour at national functions, let me ask that Madge Barrett, while retired from the public eye, play an integral role in these events. Mrs Barrett has represented Jamaica at its highest level of protocol and has done extremely well in the public eye. This decision comes against the background of athletes chewing gum while the prime minister made his welcome speech.
While the athletes performed well, they are well on their way in how to conduct themselves during celebrations, and must remember that the mode of dress and hairstyles do not form part of our international standards.
Although these little things may seem 'little', it is what is lodged in the minds of many of us who stand for high standards at all times.
I am, etc.,
