The Editor, Sir:The time is now when government should start making wise decisions that are in the best interest of Jamaica. To do so politicians will have to put personal sentiment aside, and do the right thing even if it is unpopular with the public.
This country has been in denial for two decades regarding Air Jamaica. The previous government subsidised our national airline to a point that was plain stupid. It would be crazy for this administration to continue the pattern of "throwing good money after bad" and even more so, to put the future of Jamaica's tourist sector in the hands of a struggling airline.
With the "world exposure" our country received at the recent Olympic Games, we must take positive steps to ensure that adequate plans are in place to bring Jamaica to a new level.
The facts
Before we reject the American deal it should be noted that $350 million may not be paid, but if it is paid, it will be less than the Government gives to Air Jamaica per month. The union officials that are screaming foul, they have these facts but they don't care, they just want to keep their fat pay cheques coming.
Let's face it Jamaica - the real truth is Air Jamaica is a white elephant, that will never get out of red. Our beloved airline, love it as we do is only flying for pride.
Mr. Bartlett I agree with you "do not put all your eggs in one basket" especially if you suspect the basket have a hole. Jamaica's tourist sector must be put in good hands, for there is so much at stake if you are going to gamble, put your tax dollars on the world's largest airline "American".
I am, etc.,
