  • Pink-eye outbreak sweeps Jamaica

The Ministry of Health and Environment is reporting an outbreak of acute viral conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink-eye.

Based on reports received, the outbreak appears to be affecting the parishes of St Catherine, Kingston and St Andrew, Manchester, Westmoreland, St James and St Ann.

According to Dr Eva Lewis-Fuller, director of health promotion and protection in the ministry, "The best way to prevent an infection is to avoid contact with someone who has this infection, which is caused by a virus. Persons should wash hands thoroughly regularly, and desist from touching their faces, especially around the eyes, not sharing towels, make-up or contact lenses. Shaking hands with an infected person should be avoided as such persons may have infected eye secretions on their hands."

Fuller also said parents should keep children with pink-eye at home for one week after symptoms appear.
