Kwesi Mugisa, Staff ReporterWith two games remaining, Waterford and Calabar High remain locked on points following wins over Donald Quarrie and Pembroke Hall, setting up a heated race to the finish for ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup group B honours.
While Waterford strolled to a 3-0 over Donald Quarrie at Breezy Castle, Calabar edged home team Pembroke Hall 1-0.
At Breezy Castle, striker Ricardo Smith opened the scoring for the visitors relatively early, sprinting on to a Rohan Daley pass before placing the ball wide of an advancing Donald Quarrie custodian, Kemar Goodwin.
Better second half
In the second half, Smith etched his name on the scoresheet again. When unmarked, he rose to head past the keeper, just six yards away from the target. Substitute Ricardo Davis sealed the deal for the team who exited the competition at the semi-final stage last year, when he tapped in from close range six minutes later.
"We had a much better second half. We were lackadaisical in the first but I think we definitely picked it up," said Floyd Coke, Waterford's coach. "While we are not looking past anyone, we are already looking forward to the Calabar game as that is likely to decide the group."
Only the group winners are guaranteed participation in the Walker Cup KO competition and in another close battle for leadership, Jamaica College replaced Wolmer's as group C leaders following their 14-0 thrashing of Mona. Wolmer's only managed a 1-0 win against third place Jonathan Grant.
Over in group D, Eltham, who moved to 20 points, took over leadership by a point ahead of Bridgeport (19), following a 1-0 win in their match-up at Bridgeport.
