Cornwall College, the competition's most success-ful team, roared back into competition with a solid display in the 2008 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday afternoon, when they defeated Irwin 2-0 in their crucial Zone A fixture at Jarrett Park, in Montego Bay.

By virtue of their win, the Dr Dean Weatherley-coached Corn-wall aggregation moved up to 17 points, just one behind second-place Maldon High.

St James High, unbeaten after 10 games, lead the group with 23 points and look a safe bet for one of the group's two inter-zone places.

Crucial games

"Our two remaining games are quite crucial, especially the one against Maldon, as we can't afford to drop a point," said Dr Weatherley, whose team got their goals from Ramon Foster (two), Horraine Lewis and Ian Afflick.

"The boys understand the task before them and I am sure they are going to get the job done," he added.

Hopes hanging

In Zone E, the hopes of former champions Munro College are hanging by a thread after they played to a 0-0 draw with St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS).

With the point from yesterday's game, second-place STETHS are now on 23, one behind group leaders Lacovia. Munro are precariously placed in third at 19.

"It looks like we are out," said a disappointed Hopeton Gilchrist, coach of the Munro team. "We needed to get all three points out of today's game but, unfortunately, we only got one, and as things are, that appears not to be enough."

In Zone 1, defending champions Garvey Maceo, who battled to a 0-0 draw with arch-rivals Glenmuir, are now in deep trouble with two rounds of games to be played in the group.

With group leader Old Harbour beating Tacius Golding 3-0 to move to 20 and second-place Glenmuir on 17, their 16 points look dicey.

Battle royal

In Zone H, where a battle royal is on for the two inter-zone places, Denbigh High surged into the lead as their 3-1 win against previous leaders Lennon (17) lifted them to 18 points.

Former champions Vere Technical, who are somewhat off the pace in the group, collected three important points in their 2-1 win against Claren-don College, which pushed them up to third on 15.

Meanwhile, Manchester High (16) lost their unbeaten run in Zone F but still remain leaders of the zone, after suffering a surprise 2-0 loss to Decarteret College, which moved into second place on 12 points.
