Rowdy show marks KSAC council meeting
published: Thursday | October 16, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Did you see the despicable way in which the councillors were conducting themselves at that council meeting at the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) on the Tuesday evening news broadcast on TVJ and CVM ? They were behaving worse than unsupervised kindergarten children. They had absolutely no respect for the presiding chairman and their colleague who was addressing the chair.

They transformed the meeting into a meeting for egotists who came to prove their bragging rights instead of serving the citizens of our municipality. Was their main objective to attend this meeting to disrupt it, or was it to represent the people who elected them?

Disgraceful

It was disgraceful when a vote was requested for the issues at hand and one councillor had to be touching another, who seemed oblivious of what was going on, so she could put up her hand, while another councillor saw it necessary to be warning the news cameraman not to videotape her. To me it was as if she didn't want her behaviour to be exposed.

Is this the example we want to set for our children? Behaviour like this sends the wrong message to wrongdoers in our society and gives them rationale for their devious behaviour. The taxpayers and citizens of this country deserve better than this from our elected officials on both sides of the 'zinc fence' or 'electronic gate'. The citizens of this country don't need 'egotistical bragging rights'. We need efficient and effective service; that's what we are paying for.

I am, etc.,

FRANK HILL
