Pick-9 to top $3m
published: Friday | October 17, 2008

Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer

With a carryover of $2.2 million from last Saturday, the Pick-9 should easily top the $3 million mark at Caymanas Park tomorrow.

It embraces races three to 11 on the Supreme Ventures Day programme, featuring the $2.5 million Cash Pot 'Only One For Me' Trophy, while the Super-6 will be conducted from race five to 10.

We look at the Super-6 which commences with a $390,000-$360,000 claiming race over 1400 metres to be contested by nine starters, including top contenders BLUE MARLIN, RED LION, BONNIE'S VICTORY and MOUNT DIABLO.

Tipped to repeat

Judging from the manner in which BLUE MARLIN spreadeagled a good field over 1600 metres on October 1, the five-year-old grey mare is tipped to repeat with only 51.0kg. She beat BONNIE'S VICTORY by all of eight and a quarter lengths in the fast time of 1:040.4, and gets the nod over down-in-class RED LION.

Next on the programme is a maiden condition race to be contested by the maximum 16 starters over the straight five course. The ones to note are the well-advanced debutante LIL 'TIGER (working well), CHRISTMAS TREAT, BIG BARGAIN and BORN TO DANCE, who has been knocking at the door.

BORN TO DANCE will surely fight out the finish once again, but preference is for CHRISTMAS TREAT who reared at the start and was tailed off over the straight five course (behind FLORENCE) on October 1, but in the end was only 9 1/2 eighth.

Having changed stables since, moving from Gary Subratie to Anthony Nunes, CHRISTMAS TREAT, with in-form Dane Nelson now riding, will prove hard to beat.

Briefly, CHADMAN, who has won five of his last six races in top-class company, should defy top weight of 60.5kg in the seventh race over 1200 metres for the None Such Sprint Trophy.

Then, take the vastly improved GAMBOA to outfinish MINISTEROFJUSTICE and THE GUARDIAN in the eighth over 1100 metres, down-in-class CHIEF COUNCILLOR, who ran well behind SOUND OF SPEED last Saturday, to rebound in the ninth at 1300 metres, while the unbeaten two-year-olds BRUCEONTHELOOSE and MISS RUTH should fight out the finish of the 10th for the Cash Pot 'Only One For Me' Trophy.
