Five to be honoured at Bell/Ziadie Memorial

Former FIFA referee, Owen Powell, heads the list of those to be honoured at the 22nd staging of the Bell/Zaide Memorial football match, which takes place on Heroes Day, this Monday at 3:30 p.m. at St George's College.

Others to be honoured for their service to the game of football include Art and Asher Welch, former Santos and national representatives, Patrick Chin, former St George's College and Santos representative and Alton Lawson, a stadium curator.

As is the tradition, there will be two football games on the day. The first will pit a Masters, Celebrities and Entertainers team against a St Georges Old Boys Invitational, while a KLAS Media Invitational team will tackle a team of referees in the second game.

Notable former players expected to take part in this years competition include Clive Busy Campbell, Lenworth Lenny Hyde Sr, Allan Skill Cole, Byron Earle, with interim national coach Theodore Whitmore also possibly joining the festivities.

Many entertainers are also expected to be on show and they include Elephant Man, Lukie D, Wayne Marshall and Tony Curtis.

Proceeds

For this years match, a contribution of $200 is required at the gate, with part of the proceeds going towards helping several basic schools. Children under 12 gain free access. A few of the sponsors for this years event include Air Jamaica, Western Sports, Wray and Nephew, Red Stripe and Wata.

Other past honourees of the event, which is held in the memory of former outstanding football personalities Winthorpe Jackie Bell and Dennis Zaide, include Winston Dirks Campbell, Lascelve Muggy Graham, Ali McNab and George Thompson.
