Restore old values in schools
published: Monday | October 20, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE WAS once a time in our not-too-distant history when police and fire personnel would come to our schools and take us through safety drills. These drills included walking on the road and movement in the case of fire and earthquake.

Are these drills so antiquated in the eyes of the public, security personnel and policymakers that they are no longer a part of our curriculum?

There was a time in our not-too-distant history when schools were kept in pristine condition by students, because the majority of teachers gave the students a reason to feel like they were part owners of their educational institution. Today, there is a silent warfare in the classroom, where the teachers and students have an ethos, 'it is them or us'.

Preparing the whole person

Education is the preparation of the whole person, but the constant interference of persons in society who want to sell their wares to children or who want the children in a semi-ignorant state dictates to the state, and to the schools, how the school should operate.

To help curb lawlessness

I do not wish for the old days to return in school, but I wish for the values that we placed on education to return. This will help us to curb the level of lawlessness and civil disobedience we are experiencing from all age groups in our society.

Let us all allow our children to be taught values and attitudes in school, so that they can be prepared to be well-adjusted individuals in our society.

I am, etc.,
