The Editor, Sir:This letter serves to refute the claim made by an article in The Sunday Gleaner (October 17, 2008) under the heading 'Campbell Outlines Leadership Vision' which listed Boys' Town as supporting the candidacy of Mr Paul Campbell for the presidency of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA).
The claim apparently is being made based on my attendance at Friday's press conference hosted by Paul Campbell. It was based solely on my presence as an observer at the press conference.
Let me state with absolute clarity that neither I nor the leadership of the Boys' Town community is supporting Mr Campbell's bid for the position.
We have the utmost confidence that the legendary cricketer, Ambassador Courtney Walsh, has the knowledge, skills and competence to successfully lead the JCA.
Further to this, we refute the charge made in the article that an outstanding cricketer cannot administer a cricket organisation successfully. In recent years, outstanding cricketers, such as Allan Rae and Jackie Hendricks, have done extremely well as leaders of the JCA.
We reject the effort to tarnish the reputation of one of the finest cricketers in the world, suggesting that he cannot provide leadership to our national cricket body. Ambassador Walsh is an astute businessman, an excellent all-island coach and president of Melbourne Cricket Club, the leading cricket club in the Caribbean.
It is without reservation that Boys' Town fully endorses Courtney Walsh for the post of president of the JCA.
