Scoreless Arnett bemoan missed chances ... again

THE LOUDEST cheer at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex on Sunday night came when partisan home supporters mockingly applauded the 87th minute ejection of Reno's coach, Donald 'Billy' Perkins, as the teams played out a 0-0 Digicel Premier League draw hardly worth a yawn.

The draw kept Arnett next-to-last in the 12-team standings on four points, two ahead of promoted Meadhaven, who were cut down 2-0 by St Georges at Lynch Park.

Reno dropped one place down to ninth, sharing five points with Rivoli, who came from a goal down to lead Village before being pegged back in a 3-2 loss at Jarrett Park.

Arnett dominated Reno in the first half with their best chances going to striker Kevin 'Pele' Wilson. However, his decision to try scoring from almost the goalline at the backpost, instead of laying off the ball inside, denied the Junglists an opening goal.

Wilson tried making amends with a sharp header in the 32nd minute, but Reno goalie Dennis Taylor was well positioned to keep a clean sheet, using his 18-yard box well to keep the homesters at bay for the entire game.

Tame shot

Immediately after the break, Arnett got another chance with the best move of the game, started in deep midfield by the dreadlocked Oneil Robinson, ending with Michael Dixon racing into Reno's box after picking up a return pass down the left flank from Wilson. However, sturdy defending kept him wide enough and off-balance as he fired a tame shot at Taylor from eight yards.

Reno's only meaningful shot of the match beat Arnett goalie Julian McLeish but not the crossbar, drawing gasps from the home crowd.

Arnett's player-coach, Fabian Davis, lamented his team's missed chances.

"We started well but slowed down in the latter part of the first half," said Davis, who came on as a 75th minute substitute for Robinson, but failed to create any further chance for his team.

"We were a bit unlucky not to put away our chances. That has been killing us for the season," said the former national player from who much was expected after Arnett won their first match of the season last Sunday.

Davis took over from Jerome Waite last week after Arnett went four games without a win in a disastrous start to the season.

Perkins said poor officiating caused the game to disintegrate.

"The game was terrible because of the officiating," he said. "Anything Reno did, he blew. Anything Arnett did, he didn't see."
