BUFF BAY, Portland:

St Georges defeated Meadhaven 2-0 to secure their first victory in the Digicel Premier League at Lynch Park, Buff Bay, on Sunday, courtesy of goals by Daniel Shaw (37th) and Richardo Watson (81st).

"Meadhaven did very well under the circumstances as this was the game that we really wanted and we should have won about 4-2," noted Geoffrey Maxwell, the winning coach.

"I made some changes as we were not happy with some of the players and droped them, utilising three Under 21s and they did very well," he added.

Losing coach Alrick Clarke was disappointed.

"We dominated, created the chances but we're just not getting the ball in the back of the net," he said. "This has been plaguing us all season as we have not been completing the act.

"We have to work hard in that area. We need to be more patient in the box and be more disciplined. The result does not reflect how we played but we must rally around them as they are young," he added.

St Georges stood their ground under overcast skies and slightly slippery conditions at Lynch Park, even though Meadhaven had the better of play in the first half as they dominated midfield and built a number of attacks while passing the ball around Keammar Daley, Norman Bailey, Weston Forrest and Rohan Williams.

Quick corners

St Georges countered through Gairy Banton, Maurice Jackson, Denroy Dennis and Damion Harwood, but found Kirk Duck-worth hard to penetrate.

St Georges earned two quick corners and they took the lead just after the half-hour when Shaw made a pass to Harwood. The ball was played to Dennis, whose shot was handled by Kenrick Brown in the penalty area and a penalty was awarded.

The resultant kick from the spot was taken by Shaw, who fired to the right of Kevin Graham, as the Georgians took the lead.

The second half saw Meadhaven on the attack early through Andre Hickling, Daley, Lennox Carey and Forrest, but Clunis and Taylor nullified their efforts.

Eventually, St Georges went further ahead when Banton launched an attack then passed to Omar Henderson, who relayed the ball to Shaw. He laid on the final pass to substitute Watson, who fired past Graham in the 81st minute, making it 2-0.

Meadhaven were denied shortly after by Ricardo Taylor, as he cleared the ball off the line with his custodian Ralston Robinson beaten from a Leighton Neita shot.
