Bridgeport, Eltham begin hunt for title

ST CATHERINE'S top teams, Eltham and Bridgeport, will begin the hunt to possess the Walker Cup, urban schoolboy football's most-coveted knockout title, when they face Excelsior and Norman Manley in a doubleheader at Spanish Town Prison Oval, beginning at 1 p.m. today.

Second in Group D, Bridgeport will get proceedings under way when they tackle an Excelsior team which just topped Group E ahead of St George's.

Young team

Though they are a young team, the Leebert Halliman-coached boys should provide tough opposition for a Bridge-port side said to be in the process of rebuilding.

While they have netted 39 goals, Excelsior have maintained a stingy defensive record of just six being conceded.

Known for their defensively rugged approach to the game for the past few season, an unbeaten Eltham, first in Group D, have been even more unwilling to give away goals than Excelsior, with only two conceded.

The St Catherine side has at times, however, looked pressed to find the back of the net, which has led to several close calls this season.

Norman Manley, who emerged winner from a tight Group A contest ahead of Tivoli and eliminated Charlie Smith, should provide a more than adequate test for the former champions.

While Bridgeport last captured the title in 2001, the same year they won the Manning Cup, Eltham captured the KO Cup two years ago. Excelsior were the last team to win both titles two years ago.
