Versel Thompson, Gleaner WriterPAUL BOGLE High made an impressive start in the Ben Francis Cup KO, after ambushing St Mary Technical 2-0 on Thursday at the York Sports Complex, to create quite a festive atmosphere among their many supporters.
Paul Bogle goals came from Rafe Green and substitute Janel Lee.
"It is a dream come true," remarked an elated Patrick Barclay, the Paul Bogle coach.
"We played without our top goal scorer (Rushane Webber) because of injury but we managed to keep our composure to earn this victory," Barclay added.
His opposite number, Richard Smith, expressed disappointment.
"We did not play to our full potential but we have got to regroup for our next assignment," Smith said.
Green pushed the St Thomas team in the lead with just four minutes in the game when he rifled a right foot shot from the edge of the 18-yard box past the St Mary Technical custodian, Shaven Paul, who, it seemed, was severely hampered by the glare of the sun.
Fierce attacks
Paul Bogle launched fierce attacks with Green, Alex Powell, Fabian Barrant and Andrew Wright working in tandem. Had it not been for Paul's brilliant goalkeeping, the St Mary aggregation would have conceded early goals.
St Mary Technical rallied midway the first half with Kishane Morris, Donadoni McDonald and captain Jahmica Hutchinson, combining well to dissect the Paul Bogle defence and on, one occasion, had goalkeeper Alex Williams beaten but Morris, who took the final shot, failed to place the ball in the goal.
Lee, who came on as a substitute, immediately placed his name on the scorecard when he spotted the St Mary Technical goalkeeper off his line and rifled a torrid long-range shot from about 30 yards in the 82nd minute to seal victory.
