The Editor, Sir:Thanks for Herbie Miller's refined appreciation for Peter Tosh. Tosh was more radical than Bob Marley and far less compromising in getting his music and vision out to the planetary audience.
I first met him in 1976, after his beautiful girlfriend Yvonne had been killed by a drunk driver in Kingston. But he had been driving and his friends knew that he blamed himself. He was very unhappy and bitter, and his anger came through in the interviews he gave to journalists like myself at the time.
Three years later, he was in Boston, playing with his band, Word Sound & Power in rock clubs, having recorded for the Rolling Stones' private record label. His shows, anchored by Sly Dunbar's astonishing rhythms (then known as 'rockers', 'flyers' and 'militant') were some of the best I've ever seen and heard.
His murder by low-life thieves has, in my opinion, yet to be fully explained, and if his killers have been brought to justice, I haven't heard about it.
Thanks again for remembering a great Jamaican, a true national hero and a master musician.
I am, etc.,
