Time for change re gays in Jamaica
published: Tuesday | October 28, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

We pride ourselves in being a humane, intelligent and enlightened people. We rail at injustices in other countries and at the criminal abuses perpetrated against our innocent ancestors in the days of slavery and thereafter.

Let us open our minds, our hearts and our mouths and speak out courageously against the discrimi-nation and abuse that is being perpetrated against those who may happen to be homosexual.

We don't have to like their lifestyles ... but they are God's children too, and deserve to be

To put it bluntly, racial discrimi-nation against black people was, and is, wrong ... and so is discrimination against homosexuals! We hate racial discrimination ... we must hate discrimination based on sexual orientation also: Both are ignorant and evil!

How wonderful the change in the USA!: Many of us remember the struggle for civil rights in the United States ... the days when blacks were beaten, bombed, water-hosed and murdered ... lynched for no other reason than for the colour of their skins.

Discrimination

Today, discrimination based on race or sexual orientation is illegal across the land of the free ... and it appears almost certain that the next president of the United States will be a black man! Who would have thought that possible ... even five or 10 years ago?! Jamaica must move ahead also.

The time has come for our leaders, our priests, preachers, politicians, professionals and teachers to speak out against the ignorance and injustice of abuse and discrimination against homo-sexuals. It's time to move ahead ... . It is time for a change!

I am, etc.,
