LETTER OF THE DAY - Halt the tsunami of carnage NOW!
published: Friday | October 31, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

The majority of the population, having been negatively impacted by the effects of crime on children, family members and friends are adamant. Hang them high is their answer to the spiralling crime wave, in an effort to brake the upward trend.

Yet, the minority continue its opposition, refusing to have the tsunami of carnage addressed in short measure. Long-term solutions are necessary and steps need to be taken to implement them now, but these cannot help the long-suffering individuals who are hurting and dying now. Desperate situations require drastic measures.

How long for reprieve?

How long must we wait for some reprieve? The cry is strong, the call is to protect our children and save our souls. Christians are praying and the human rights activists are busy doing their part.

To all intent and purpose, efforts are being made to deal with this critical situation. Parents of raped, mutilated and dead children await justice. The bereaved relatives of raped, shot and burnt elderly persons are also waiting.

The innocent victims marauded by these predators, and their family members, await the short-term solutions of the 'thinker' to the monster devouring our nation.

There is much ado about the innocent being hanged, but what of the innocent who has died?

Only God is infallible, so man's judgement will always be flawed. It is plain to see that there is never perfect justice by a jury. What then do we do? Abolish the law?

When Paul Bogle marched on Stony Gut, innocent people died. George William Gordon died an innocent man. So the question is, will we ever be able to fully protect the innocent on both sides?

Protecting children

How do we protect our children now? How do we safeguard the elderly now? How do we protect our young entrepreneurs now?

Until workable solutions can be provided by 'thinkers', the affected majority has no alternative but to demand that a time-honoured method be resuscitated in an effort to stem the maniacal tide.

I am, etc.,
