Simpson Miller
OPPOSITION LEADER Portia Simpson Miller has renewed her call for a united effort to tame the crime monster.
"I am saying, the time has come when all of us must join together to say enough is enough.
"Fighting crime is not just the responsibility of the security forces or the Government, it is about all of us working together," declared Simpson Miller yesterday as she addressed members of the Rotary Club of Kingston.
Simpson Miller had gone to the Rotary meeting with a prepared speech dealing with the global economic crisis and its impact on Jamaica.
Spoke passionately
However, after a few minutes, she discarded the speech and spoke passionately about the level of crime in Jamaica with special emphasis on the attacks on women and children.
"This is not a part of the Jamaican culture, this is something that is alien, and now we are facing the threat of a number of our young women being snatched," Simpson Miller said, pointing to recent cases of women and children being killed.
The Opposition leader repeated her party's claim that it is willing to work with the Government in the fight against crime.
She called on every Jamaican to support the anti-crime measures.
"We all need to do something, we cannot just sit back and say the police, the police," Simpson Miller argued.
She urged the Government to implement more measures to build communities and create jobs as part of the crime-fighting strategy.
More than 1,300 persons have died violently since the start of the year. The victims include 56 children and 112 women.
