Johnston honoured
published: Tuesday | November 4, 2008

Johnston

A third generation Johnston, like his father and grandfather before him, Charles Johnston has made an indelible mark on shipping in Jamaica. Last Thursday, his contribution to the growth of this global industry, was recognised when he was inducted into the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica's (PSOJ) Hall of Fame.

His induction into the Hall of Fame comes two years after he was conferred with the Order of Distinction, Commander Class, in 2006, for his contribution to agriculture, specifically the banana industry.

Extremely honoured

Chairman of the Jamaica Producers Group (JPG) and the Jamaica Fruit and Shipping Company Limited, Johnston, who is also a member of the managing committee of the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ), in accepting the award said: "I am extremely honoured and proud to be inducted into the PSOJ's Hall of Fame as this award can very well be considered the premier award of the private sector in Jamaica."

"I am joining a list of esteemed and respected Jamaicans and I wish to thank the President, Chris Zacca, and his selection committee for this honour," Johnston continued.

Johnston's achievements as a businessman include the growth of JPG as one of the largest multinationals in the Caribbean, sourcing fruit from Africa, Latin America and Jamaica. He has also led JPG through its transition into a major processor of fresh and frozen food in Britain.

Johnston recognised his family members as well as colleagues and business partners who contributed to his success. Topping his list was former managing director of the JPG, Marshall Hall and his secretary, Andrea Anderson.

Eternally grateful

"I am eternally grateful to my father and my grandfather who laid the foundations of my business education and taught me the many valuable lessons about life. To my mother, Anna, for her unconditional love and support," Johnston said.

He also thanked his siblings, nieces and nephews, as well as his children and his former and current wife.

Those who celebrated with Johnston included president of the SAJ, Michael Bernard, former SAJ presidents Francis 'Paco' Kennedy, Harry Maragh and Grantley Stephenson; president of the Jamaica Exporters Association, Marjory Kennedy; Commissioner of Customs, Danville Walker, members of the SAJ's managing committee; general manager Trevor Riley, Kim Clarke, Corah-Ann Robertson-Sylvester, Donavan Martin and Paula Pinnock.
